Cedar Park: Project Overview

The City of Sandy is developing a new community park in the heart of our downtown!

The site for Cedar Park (the lower field area behind the old Cedar Ridge Middle School buildings) includes approximately 10.5 acres north of Pleasant Street, between SE Meinig Avenue and Strauss Avenue. The current site includes a few amenities such as the Sandy Skate Park and former school fields, but it is mostly undeveloped.

The first step in making this new park a reality was to create the park development plan, which provided a framework to guide its construction. The plan relied significantly on input and ideas provided by our community.

Cedar Park is envisioned to serve as a focal point and gathering place for all Sandy residents and will include a wide range of amenities, such as an action sports facility to include a pump track/skate park, trails, playground, picnic shelters, natural and open spaces, and restrooms.

Choosing a Name:

Public engagement has been central since the conception of our new park and the naming process was no different.  On September 14, 2023, the first park naming survey went live.  Participants were encouraged to enter unique park names based on the parameters set forth in our Park Naming Policy.  During our initial survey, we found that 10 names were suggested multiple times.  A Park Naming Committee vetted these suggestions and blindly ranked them based on the pre determined parameters.  On November 3, 2023, a final survey containing the top three suggestions went live and on November 27th, the survey closed.  With 284 votes (nearly 50%), Cedar Park was chosen as the official name.
