Sandy Style

On April 2nd of 2008, the City of Sandy adopted design standards effective for all commercial, industrial, and non-residential (school and church) buildings. Known as the "Sandy Style," the design guidelines are the result of extensive public involvement.

Downtown Parking

The City of Sandy has two publicly owned parking lots in the downtown couplet that are absolutely free (see map below) for citizens and visitors alike.

Pioneer Parking Lot is an untimed parking lot on Pioneer Boulevard between Scales Avenue and Bruns Avenue.  The lot is behind the white buildings on the south side of the street (i.e. Two Brothers Mexican Restaurant, Otto's Ski & Mountain Bike Shop, Pioneer Barber Shop, etc.) and can be accessed at Bruns Avenue.

Creating a Business Plan

A business plan is the best way to determine if you really do have a good business idea that is worth pursuing.  A business plan serves two primary purposes: it helps a business owner analyze whether or not their great idea can bring in more revenue than it costs to produce, and it explains the business idea in great detail to potential investors (like banks, for instance).  A business plan for a new business should include assumptions about things like:

Competition Maps

Welcome to the City of Sandy's Competition Maps page.  We have created three different series of maps showing the locations of all of the national and regional chain stores located within city limits.  Each link has two maps - the top map for each link shows west Sandy, or everything west of Bluff Road.  The bottom map shows downtown Sandy, or everything east of Bluff Road.  These maps are also scalable, so please zoom in if you're having trouble reading them.  Please contact the City of Sandy Economic Development office at (503) 489-2159 with any questions.

Bicycle Safety

The City of Sandy takes bike safety seriously.  As we build out dedicated bike lanes and other bike infrastructure to the city's transportation system, we strongly encourage citizens to brush up on their safety knowledge and help eliminate avoidable accidents in our community. The following page is dedicated to promoting bicycle safety at all levels, from identifying the rules of the road for cyclists and the motorists that share the road with them to directing you to local sources for bike safety gear.

Business Licenses

2025 BUSINESS LICENSE RENEWALS ARE NOW IN PROGRESS

In addition to information about business license and transit taxes, this page also provides links to other related information. Anyone engaging in business within the Sandy city limits, including home businesses, needs a business license and may be subject to transit taxes as well.

Welcome to the Sandy Business Community!

Sandy’s public transit system is supported by a local business tax per Ordinance No. 2012-10.  The business transit tax is assessed on all businesses and is an employer paid tax.  Sandy Municipal Code Chapter 5.05 provides the details for this tax.  All forms of taxable compensation are subject to the tax. Transit service information, the ordinance and a transit tax form are also available on this website.

Home Businesses

The provision for a home business is in recognition of the needs of many people who are engaged in small-scale business ventures which cannot be expanded to a full-scale enterprise. It is the intent of this section that full-scale commercial or professional operations, which would ordinarily be conducted in a commercial or industrial district, continue to be conducted in the appropriate zoning district and not a dwelling. These regulations apply to family day care businesses.
