Proposed Sandy Aquatics and Recreation District
Concept Overview
The City of Sandy has explored the potential of forming a new aquatics and recreation special district encompassing the greater Sandy area. The special district concept was developed as a solution to provide stable funding for aquatics and recreation programming in our area, and would allow for renovation and re-opening of the Sandy Pool (Aquatic Center). It could also help fund some of the projects envisioned for Sandy Community Campus property, such as community-oriented facilities and parkland improvements. Previous public input for the community campus indicated broad support for exploring the district concept further. The Community Campus web page contains a timeline of the evolution of this idea and the broader Community Campus issue.
In March 2020, the Sandy City Council commissioned a telephone survey of voters within the proposed boundaries of the district to measure support in anticipation of a possible formation measure on the November 2020 ballot.
2020 Poll Results
The telephone voter survey, conducted in March 2020, indicated that there was not majority support for approving the concept if it was on the ballot today. As expected, the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic uncertainty of the crisis has changed voter sentiment about funding measures. The results of the polling (below) were presented to the City Council on April 20. The Council may revisit the special district idea in the future if circumstances improve.
