Hazardous Trees

Hazardous Tree
  • Generally, an immediate tree hazard is when a tree suddenly starts uprooting (cracks appear in the soil) or a tree suddenly starts splitting (fresh, white sapwood is visible in tree cracks) where the main branches connect to the trunk.

  • Trees on private property that are an immediate hazard to a home/structure should be removed immediately by a professional tree service company.  Please contact Chris Relyea crelyea@ci.sandy.or.us within seven (7) days to get a retroactive permit for the tree removal.

  • For trees on City property that are an immediate hazard, please contact the city through the app or phone (see below).

Each year before the worst of the weather arrives, examine the trees on your property with an eye towards potential hazards.  The International Society of Arboriculture recommends a more thorough assessment of your trees by an ISA Certified Arborist if your answer is yes to any of the following questions:

  1. Are there large dead branches in the tree? Are there detached branches hanging in the tree?

  2. Does the tree have cavities or rotten wood along the trunk or in major branches?

  3. Are honey colored mushrooms present at the base of the tree?

  4. Are there cracks or splits in the trunk or where the branches are attached?

  5. Have adjacent trees fallen over or died?

  6. Has the trunk developed a strong lean?
